Eric's New Scarf

This is the second post for me today. So make sure you read the first for a little exciting news.

This weekend Eric went to Boise for a Quiz Bowl tournament. After Swedish class on Friday he met up with some other members and rode with them for nine hours. He was in the very back most of the time, and couldn't hear the other guys most of the time getting him a reputation as the quiet guy. He rolled into Boise at the early time of 12:30 at night and got a ride with another member's sister to Aunt Linda and Uncle Grant's house. He thought he'd get to spend more time with them, but ended up having to leave after the competition that day, so he ended up being at their house long enough to eat breakfast with his Idaho family.

It is also Special Olympics week in Boise and teams from all over the globe are coming to compete. special blue and white scarves were knitted for the occasion. People from all over sent in these scarves and Boise is rife with them. People on the street are wearing them and a statue even got into the action. Aunt Linda gave Eric one. Just before he put his on his cousin Kendra, who is going to be snowshoeing in the Special Olympics later this year, took her scarf off her neck and insisted that Eric wear it. He proudly wore it over the course of the Quiz Bowl. It was literally the first scarf he remembers wearing. After recieving several compliments he decided he must be a scarf person.

There were three UW teams, and although the winning team was from UW, Eric's team won 4 rounds out of ten. Eric was very excited when a rather technical Linguistics question came up and he knew the answer: The Sapir-Whorff Hypothesis. He answered several other questions including one whose answer was Belgium. This is note worthy because as he was leaving the room after the round Eric heard one of the girls on the other teamm say "And I used to live in Belgium". The competition was over by 5:30 when we started heading back. One of the guys on my team comes from a big Mormon family in Richland, and all of his parents 7 kids are gone now, so they were more than happy to host our 10 team members, with enough beds for all of us. We got back on Sunday afternoon.

Now Eric has a nice new scarf which he wore to class today. A friend of his Syntax asked him if he had a cold. I guess nobody expects him to wear a scarf on his own free will. If you ever see Eric wearing a blue and white scarf, fear not he isn't sick, he just likes his new scarf courtesy of his cousin Kendra.
